Frederick Jumps To First NCAA Qualifier For Red Storm Track & Field

    QUEENS, N.Y. - Highlighting the St. John's track & field team's double-meet weekend was freshman Priscilla Frederick who earned the Red Storm's first NCAA qualifier this season, securing head coach Jim Hurt's 18-year streak at the NCAA Regionals.

    The Red Storm split the team between two meets this weekend, competing at University of North Carolina's Tony Waldrop Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy's Coach Omeltchenko Invitational in Kings Point, N.Y.

    Frederick was the runner-up at the Tony Waldrop high jump event with an outdoor season-best distance of 1.75 meters (5 feet, 8.75 inches). With her second place jump, Frederick qualifies to compete at the 2008 NCAA Regional Championships at the end of May.

    Sophomore Asia Nettles also earned a postseason qualifying time in Chapel Hill, as she placed seventh in the 400-meter dash with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 57.14.

    The Storm tallied five additional top 10 scores at the Tony Waldrop meet.

    Junior Phobay Kutu-Akoi was second runner up in the 100-meter dash, placing behind Flings Owusu-Agyapong from Syracuse and Ashley McKiver from Appalachian State, respectively. Kutu-Akoi's third place time of 12.31 seconds is .01 seconds away from a BIG EAST qualifying time.

    Junior Tyneka Greene finished fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.66, while fellow classmate Venisa Clarke-Lee finished seventh behind Frederick in the high jump with a distance of 1.60 meters (5 feet 3 inches).

     

     

    Sophomore Asia Davy finished ninth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.94, and the St. John's 4x400-meter relay team finished fifth with a time of 3:57.43.

    Meanwhile, at the Coach "O" Invite, hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, senior Dominique Eason out-threw her competition in the hammer throw with a distance of 44.70 meters (146 feet, 8 inches). Eason also finished fifth in the discus and ninth in the shot put.

    Fellow thrower freshman Rachel Williams placed third in two events, the shot put (11.11 meters; 36 feet, 5.5 inches) and the discus (30.63 meters; 100 feet, 6 inches). Williams also placed fourth in the hammer throw (36.86 meters; 120 feet, 11 inches). She had a final top 10 finish in the javelin throw, placing sixth with a distance of 27.81 meters (91 feet, 3 inches).

    Freshman thrower Courtney Kolinsky also competed well, finishing eighth in the discus with a distance of 26.48 meters (86 feet, 10 inches) and 11th in the shot put.

    In addition to the throwers, the Red Storm also posted eight more top 10 finishes at Kings Point.

    Freshman Bintou Dibba was runner up in the long jump with a distance of 5.35 meters (17 feet, 0.65 inches).

    The 4x100-meter relay team of Lauren Wynter, Vanessa Thompson, Ashlee Payne and Shakira Best was also a runner up with a time of 4:01.81 minutes.

    Sophomore Brianna Drexler placed fourth in the pole vault event, with a career high and new school record height of 2.40 meters (7 feet, 10.50 inches).

    The Red Storm finished third, ninth and 10th in the women's 800-meter run, as Best, Rakibat Abiola and Payne finished with times of 2:21.43, 2:24.34, and 2:24.75, respectively.

    Wynter finished fourth as the lone Red Storm runner in the 400-meter dash, crossing the tape at 59.33.

    The Red Storm track & field team will be back in action on Monday, April 14, as it hosts its second Spring Series event on DaSilva Memorial Field with Monday Meeting Part II. The meet will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Queens, N.Y.
