QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's senior Maxcine Foster and junior Phobay Kutu-Akoi out ran the competition in their respective events at the Yale Springtime Invitational in New Haven, Conn., on Sunday. Foster finished first in the 400-meter dash, with a time of 55.63 seconds, recording her second ECAC qualifying time of the year. Foster hasn't competed in the event since the Sam Howell Invitational on April 4, where she ran a season-best time of 55.10 seconds. Her time of 55.10 seconds places her at 5th on the BIG EAST list going into BIG EAST Championship weekend on Saturday. Three other St. John's athletes finished in the top 10 in the 400-meter at the Yale Invite. Freshmen Rene Cousins and Lauren Wynter crossed the tape at fourth and seventh, respectively. Cousins finished at 58.50 and Wynter came in at 1:00.42. In the 100-meter dash, Kutu-Akoi broke the tape at 12.13 seconds, registering a season-best time in the event. The junior's time qualified her for the ECAC championships on May 16-18 and is 0.28 seconds away from an NCAA provisional time. Kutu-Akoi was also runner up in the 200-meter dash, as she finished 0.03 seconds behind the winner, Shannon Gagne of New Haven, for a time of 25.50. Cousins and freshman Kate Dulmovits finished fourth and sixth in the race with times of 26.07 and 26.61 seconds, respectively. In the pit, freshman Bintou Dibba recorded a runner up distance in the long jump also falling just short of New Haven's Gagne with a distance of 5.28 meters (17 feet, 6.75 inches). Dibba also competed in the triple jump finishing sixth with a distance of 10.12 meters (33 feet, 2.5 inches).
Senior Dominique Eason and freshman Kayla Regulski additionally registered season-best marks in their respective events. Eason threw a distance of 44.94 meters (147 feet, 5 inches) in the hammer for an eighth place finish. Regulski has consistently dropped seconds off her time in the 1,500-meter run all season long. At Sunday's race, the freshman raced to a 5:22.44 finish, good for 36th place. St. John's had a successful showing in the 800-meter dash with five athletes finishing in the top 10. Junior Tyneka Greene led the pack finishing second with a time of 2:17.02. Sophomore Pam Petruski was right on her tail finishing third at 2:17.25. Freshmen Kim Piard and Sarah Sudbury crossed the tape side by side finishing fifth and sixth with times of 2:18.67 and 2:19.67, respectively. Fellow classmate Shakira Best wrapped up the top 10 group with a ninth place finish at 2:20.82. Junior Rakibat Abiola and freshman Ashlee Payne also competed in the race, finishing 23rd and 26th, respectively. In other distance events, freshman Lori Dougherty finished 27th with a time of 11:23.54 in the 3,000-meter run. In the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Asia Davy placed sixth with a time of 1:05.51 and freshman Vanessa Thompson finished eighth with a time of 1:05.92. Sophomore Brianna Drexler also finished sixth, with a time of 17.43 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles. Off the track, freshman Rachel Williams threw in three events, finishing sixth in the shot put with a distance of 11.34 meters (37 feet, 2.50 inches) and 17th in the hammer throw with a distance of 32.99 meters (108 feet, 3 inches). She also competed along side the men in the javelin throw, finishing 23rd overall with a distance of 27.27 meters (89 feet, 6 inches). She was the only woman to compete. Eason also competed in two other events, in addition to the hammer. She finished 10th in the shot put and 12th in the discus, hurling at 9.96 meters (32 feet, 8.25 inches) and 32.49 meters (106 feet, 7 inches), respectively. Up next, the Red Storm will head into championship season, starting with the BIG EAST Championships hosted by Villanova in Philadelphia on May 2-4. |
