Oct. 10, 2005 QUEENS, N.Y. - Red Storm volleyball outside hitter Hui Ping Huang was named this week's BIG EAST Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. The honor comes on the heels of St. John's hard-fought loss to 10th-ranked Notre Dame on Saturday and a 3-0 sweep of DePaul on Sunday. The freshman from the Republic of China had a match-high and personal best 25 kills in the contest against the Fighting Irish. The total was also a season-high by any Red Storm player this year. She hit just over 45 percent, while adding eight digs and two blocks. In the match against DePaul, she had 15 kills, hit .375 and posted three blocks for 18 points. Huang boasts a season hitting percentage of .337, placing her first on the team. The outside hitter is tied for the team lead with 28 aces and averages 2.23 digs per game. Her consistency at the net has paid off, as she has recorded 225 kills and 38 blocks on the year. The Red Storm has an overall record of 16-6, 2-3 in the BIG EAST. Huang and the Red Storm return to action on Friday, Oct. 14 against conference foe Connecticut at Carnesecca Arena.
