Women's Rowing Wins Kelly Cup
April 27, 2008
PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's rowing team swept the Kelly Cup for the first time in history on Saturday, besting city rivals Drexel, Temple, La Salle and Philadelphia University. Coupled with a strong performance by the SJU men's team, it marked the first time in school history that both Hawks' Varsity 8 boats won the titles in the same year. The Varsity 8 was comprised of: Andi Hartfield, Brianne Kammerman, Lauren Sysol, Christina DiSanto, Colleen Greway, Danielle Brady, Alicia Easby-Smith, Liz Sauter, and Debbie Bateman. The Hawks won the Freshman 4, Varsity 4, Freshman 8, 2nd Varsity 8 and the Varsity 8. The Varsity 8 took control of the race right from the start, winning the race by more than 15 seconds to earn its second Kelly Cup in two years. Sandra Kelly, Jack Kelly's widow, was on hand to present the trophy to
the Hawks' crew. "It was an honor having Mrs. Kelly come to the
boathouse for the racing," said SJU coach Gerry Quinlan.
