May 14, 2008

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis outdoor track and field placed three student-athletes on the men's and women's Academic All-Conference team, as announced by the Atlantic 10 Conference today. Senior Laura Coyer (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) of the women's team was honored, while junior Austin Critchlow (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame) and sophomore David Whelan (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) of the men's team picked up Academic All-Conference accolades.

"I am excited that these student-athletes are being recognized for their hard work both academically and on the track," first-year head coach Jon Bell said. "It is a testament to the kind of people they are. They are tremendous athletes, yet they also work hard to ensure they get the full college experience."

Coyer, who is graduating with a nursing degree, placed fifth in the 1,500 meters at the A-10 Championships with a mark of 4:40.92. She also ran a leg on SLU's 4x800-meter relay team that finished second at the A-10s with a school-record time of 9:06.28. Coyer established the school record in the 1,500 meters at the prestigious John McDonnell Invitational at the University of Arkansas, winning the event with a time of 4:36.34. She also holds the school record in the 5,000 meters (17:39.34).

Critchlow finished second in the 800 meters at the A-10 Championships with a school-record time of 1:52.89. In all, he posted the team's top six times in the 800 meters this season. In addition, the biology major ran a leg on SLU's school-record setting 4x800-meter relay team, which registered a time of 7:51.44.

Whelan, a biomedical engineering major, is the Billikens' top sprinter. At the A-10 Championships, he qualified for the 100-meter dash final and ultimately finished seventh in the event with a time of 11.06. Whelan also set the school record in the 200 meters at the McDonnell Invitational, finishing the event in 22.54.

It is the second time this season the trio were honored for academics. All were named Academic All-Conference earlier this year following the indoor track and field season.
