Hendrickson Inks Two to NLIs
May 16, 2008
ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis baseball coach Darin Hendrickson announced today that Alex Alemann (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) and Jon Myers (O'Fallon, Mo./Meramec CC/Ft. Zumwalt South) have signed National Letters of Intent to attend the University and play baseball for the Billikens. They begin their eligibility in the 2008-09 academic year. "These three guys add to an already impressive recruiting class that is arguably the most important one that we will ever have," Hendrickson said. "They will fill immediate needs in adding depth to our pitching staff in addition to a true shortstop. Including the guys signed earlier in the fall, this class is turning out to be quite special. We need to continue to recruit players who know how to, and expect, to win. We need guys with a burning desire to win and compete at a high level. They also need to be goal-oriented in school and in baseball, because those things correlate." Alemann is a 6-foot-6 right-hander who played at Cypress Bay High School. This season, he posted a 5-2 record and a 3.07 ERA on the mound for the Lightning while striking out 28 batters in 41 innings. He was named Performer of the Week in Broward County when he helped Cypress Bay to a 6-2 district victory over Western, allowing just one earned run in six innings while striking out five in the contest. "Alex played in the talent-laden Broward County area at one of the top 20 high schools in the country, so he is comfortable playing against tough competition," Hendrickson said. "He has a tremendous upside, and he will turn into a projected starter down the road. I expect Alex to be a guy who competes right away and adds much needed depth to our pitching staff." Myers was a preseason All-American at Meramec. He ended up earning All-Region honors following the season after leading the team with a .404 batting average. In addition, Myers slugged 13 home runs and drove in 36 runs. In his first season at Meramec in 2007, Myers hit .373 while driving in 26 runs. He prepped at Ft. Zumwalt South High School, where he was a first-team All-State selection at shortstop in 2006 after hitting .386 with four homers, 24 RBIs, 22 runs scored and 10 steals.
"In Jon we found a true shortstop who will shore up one of the most important positions on the field," Hendrickson said. "He needs to come in and hit the ground running and not miss a beat. If he comes in and shows he can play at this level, I believe he may have a future in baseball after college." Alemann and Myers join eight other future Billikens who signed in the fall. Those players are: right-handed pitcher Bryant Cotton (Omaha, Neb./Butler County CC), right-handed pitcher Garrett Cooper (Southington, Conn./Southington), catcher Connor Gandossy (Redding, Conn./St. Luke's School), left-handed pitcher Jimmy Foster (Wentzville, Mo./Holt), infielder/right-handed pitcher Jerry Mancuso (Kansas City, Mo./Rockhurst), right-handed pitcher Andrew Meister (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson), outfielder Nate Young (Lee's Summit, Mo. /Lee's Summit North) and outfielder Ben Zupan (Haddam, Conn./Xavier). |
