Billikens Top Tulsa 2-1 in Spring Opener
April 5, 2008
ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis topped Tulsa 2-1 today in its men's soccer spring opener at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Kyle Patterson (Birmingham, England) started the scoring early in the match, and Brandon Barklage (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) tallied the game winner midway through the first half. "I am pleased we were able to start our spring schedule with a win against a good opponent," head coach Dan Donigan said. "We saw good things from a variety of individuals, and certainly there are some things we need to clean up, but all in all it was a good effort being our first match of the spring season." Patterson got the Bills on the board early in the first half after he beat two defenders in the corner and crossed the ball into the box. The serve deflected off a Tulsa defender and into the net for SLU's first goal of the game. Later, Barklage sent a low liner from 22 yards that snuck behind the Golden Hurricane's keeper to make it 2-0 Billikens. Tulsa, which last season finished 15-3-2 and captured the Conference USA title, scored a goal late in the first half. After a short corner kick, there was a scramble in the box. A Tulsa player pounced on the loose ball and buried a shot from three yards. The two teams would go on to play a scoreless second half. The Billikens continue their spring exhibition season in two weeks when they welcome UMKC on Saturday, April 19. Game time at Hermann Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
