July 28, 2010
ST. LOUIS - Four Saint Louis University men's soccer players landed on the Atlantic 10's preseason All-Conference team, as announced today by the A-10 office following a vote of the league's head coaches. Junior midfielder/forward Mike Roach (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) and sophomore midfielder Alex Sweetin (Overland Park, Kan./Rockhurst) were named to the 11-player All-Conference team, while freshman defender Christian Briggs (Amin, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Mary's) and freshman forward Adnan Gabeljic (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) appeared on the All-Rookie team. Roach, the league's top returning scorer, accumulated 24 points (11G, 2A) in 17 games last year. His 0.65 goals per game ranked 12th in the nation, while his 1.41 points per game were 23rd nationally. A second-team All-Conference selection, Roach was named Most Outstanding Player of the A-10 Championship after helping the Bills seize the league title by scoring twice and registering an assist in two tournament games. Sweetin, the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Year, collected 12 points (3G, 6A) to rank third on last year's club. He led the team with six assists, four of which came on game-winning goals. One of three Billikens to start every match in 2009, Sweetin was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Rookie "Team of the Season." Briggs led his St. Mary's club to a third-place national finish in 2009 while pacing all defenders with four goals and three assists in 18 games. He was named to Trinidad and Tobago's National All-Star Team in 2009 and was also tabbed the club's Most Disciplined Player.
Gabeljic, a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) High School All-American, scored 23 goals while helping Mehlville High School to a 20-5 record as a senior. He was named the Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year, the Missouri Class 3 Offensive Player of the Year and was a first-team All-State pick in 2009. Gabeljic graduated and enrolled at SLU in the spring 2010 semester, which allowed him to participate in spring camp. The Billikens begin fall training Aug. 14, and the first of three exhibition tilts is slated for Aug. 20 at 7:30 p.m. against Evansville at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. The season opener is set for Sept. 4 against South Florida at Hermann Stadium. Ticket information can be found at SLUBillikens.com, or by clicking here. |
