Billikens Glide Past Eastern Illinois

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis men's tennis improved to 3-0 with a 6-1 victory over Eastern Illinois Friday night at Sunset Tennis Center. "The aim of our team in every match is to take care of business," head coach Jonathan Zych said. "We did that tonight by executing well." The Billikens began by sweeping the doubles matches. James McArthur and P.J. Hendrie easily handled Jeff Rutherford and Matyas Hilgert 8-2 at No. 1; Ken Nordheim and Chris Eriksson defeated Warren Race and Michael Sperry 8-5 at No. 2; and Jake Hendrie and Drew Feder were 8-4 winners over Jamie Firth and Vance Davis 8-4 at No. 3. Eastern Illinois (2-2) captured its only victory at No. 1 singles, with Rutherford claiming a 6-4, 7-6 win over Nordheim. The Panthers almost earned another point at No. 5, but Bryan Beasley overcame a second-set loss and edged Sperry 6-2, 5-7 (10-8). Elsewhere, McArthur beat Hilgert 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2; Jake Hendrie got past Firth 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3; Eriksson downed Race 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4; and P.J. Hendrie registered a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Justin Haag at No. 6.
The Billikens return to action Friday, Feb. 19, when they host Western Illinois. Match time at Sunset Tennis Center is 4 p.m. |
