Bills Fall in Regular-Season Finale
March 29, 2008
ST. LOUIS - Illinois State won the doubles point and captured three singles contests in a 4-3 victory over Saint Louis Saturday night at Sunset Tennis Center. The Billikens (8-9) picked up forfeit wins from short-handed Illinois State (8-4) at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles, but it wasn't enough to derail the Redbirds. Luka Marinkovic and Daniel Tobar defeated Felipe Acosta and Paul Feder 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, while Nuno Jacinto and Filip Miljevic posted an 8-6 triumph over P.J. Hendrie and Sean McManus at No. 2. Both of SLU's on-court singles victories were halted in the 10-point super-tiebreaker. At No. 1, Acosta prevailed 7-6, 3-6, 4-2 (ret.) over Jacinto, and Marcus Fadul was a 4-6, 6-2, 4-1 (ret.) winner over Miljevic. In a closely contested No. 3 singles tilt, Tobar held on for a 7-5, 6-4 victory over McManus. "Both teams fought hard and wanted the match badly," head coach Jonathan Zych said. "The key was ISU winning the doubles point. They're very good in doubles, but we were right there with them. "Despite the loss, I'm proud of the energy and fight we showed," Zych added. "We just have to channel that a little bit better and be a little more disciplined." The Billikens begin Atlantic 10 Championship play on Friday in Pittsburgh. Seedings and first-round pairings will be announced Monday.
