ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis head women's basketball coach Shimmy Gray-Miller today announced the hiring of Glenn Box as assistant coach. Box replaces Tony Francis, who became head coach at Lindenwood University.

Box comes to Saint Louis following a two-year stint as an assistant coach at Western Michigan, where he worked primarily with the Broncos' guards. He spent six seasons at Rend Lake College in Ina, Ill., serving the first three years as an assistant with the men's program before taking over as head coach of the women's team. Box, a native of Cairo, Ill., began his coaching career in the Cairo school district.

The Rend Lake women posted a 64-31 record (.674) and defeated four nationally ranked opponents during Box's three-year tenure. His 2007-08 team assembled a 21-11 ledger and reached No. 16 in the NJCAA national poll. The 2006-07 Lady Warriors fashioned a 24-8 mark, second best in school history, while finishing among the top 25 in the nation in scoring, field-goal percentage, 3-point field-goal percentage and free-throw percentage. Box's 2005-06 squad went 19-12.

Box coached Rend Lake players who garnered six All-Conference accolades and four All-Region plaudits. That group included Rebecca Harris, a 2006 honorable mention All-American.

Box earned an associate's degree in elementary education at Rend Lake in 1996 and a bachelor's degree in criminal justice at Southeast Missouri State in 1998.

"We took our time with this hire to ensure that we got the best possible assistant coach for our team and program," Gray-Miller said. "There is no doubt that we did that by hiring Glenn Box. He is a perfect complement to a staff that I believe was already pretty special.

"Glenn was highly recommended by everyone I spoke with. I am flattered that he chose to leave a good situation at Western Michigan to help our program get over the hump and reach the upper echelon of the Atlantic 10 Conference.

"I love the fact that Glenn has been a successful head coach at the collegiate level," Gray-Miller said. "He has recruited successfully, developed players and implemented systems, and because of that he will bring a great deal of confidence and experience to our program. Glenn is similar to Stephanie (Rich), Honey (Brown) and me in that he is passionate and hardworking and cares deeply about the young ladies he coaches.

"Glenn also is a man of good character, and that is important to us. Our program got better with this hire, and at the end of the day, that is what matters most."

"I am excited about the opportunity to be an assistant coach at Saint Louis University," Box said. "I want to help Billiken women's basketball reach its fullest potential, which is to be among the elite programs in the Atlantic 10 Conference year in and year out."
