April 23, 2008
AURORA, Ill. - Saint Louis turned in its second straight top-three finish of the spring volleyball season by placing second at the 24-team College Invitational at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill., last weekend. The Billikens, who fell to Georgia Tech in the 30-point title game, lost just one game prior to the title contest. "We played awesome this weekend," Billiken head coach Anne Kordes said. "I was impressed with our offensive efficiency and passing. It was a total team effort. We are well-balanced with talent at every position. It makes it hard for teams to stop us. I was particularly impressed with Bridget Fonke and her leadership. Bridget hurt her ankle last weekend but she lit it up all day, especially at the end. Lauren Christman also had a great tournament." The Billikens defeated DePaul 2-0 and 2007 Horizon League regular-season champion UW-Milwaukee 2-1 in pool play to advance to the Gold Bracket. In quarterfinal action, SLU downed Purdue 2-0 for the second time in a week and went on to beat 2007 SEC West champion LSU 2-0 in the semifinals. Among the tradition-laden volleyball programs also participating in the tournament were Connecticut, Illinois State, Kansas State, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan State , North Carolina and Virginia.
