Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season

New Haven, Conn. - Stony Brook's track and field teams opened their outdoor seasons with a pair of first-place finishes in the men's and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Freshman Carolina Cortes (Woodmere, N.Y.) took first for the women in a time of 11:32.59, while sophomore Alex Felce (Stroud, England) crossed first for the men in 9:31.49.

Senior Kerry Salzano (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a second-place finish for the Seawolves in the 5,000 meter (17:53.96) and sophomore Stephanie Vos (Apalachin, N.Y.) crossed third in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.75). Junior Fisayo Tunde (Selden, N.Y.) also ran well for Stony Brook, posting an eighth-place finish in the 200-meter (27.33) and a ninth-place finish in the 100-meter (13.39).

The men's team performed well in the field events. Sophomore Robert Treadwell (Glendale, N.Y.) took seventh in the javelin (49.28), senior Junior Miller's (Smithtown, N.Y.) throw of 13.93 meters in the shot put was good enough for eighth and junior Jeremy Vasquez (Huntington, N.Y.) finished tenth in the discus with a distance of 37.11 meters.

Stony Brook's next meet will be Wednesday at the Quinnipiac Quad Meet in New Haven, Conn.
