Witkowski Leads Baseball To 6-3 Victory Over Seton Hall
May 7, 2008
South Orange, N.J. - Junior Brian Witkowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with three RBI as the Stony Brook University baseball team used a five-run sixth on its way to a 6-3 victory over the Seton Hall Pirates on Wednesday night at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Seawolves improve to 27-19 with the victory while the Pirates fall to 28-18. Witkowski got the Seawolves off to a quick start, slamming his seventh home run of the season to lead off the game against Seton Hall starter Jesse Gwaltney. The Pirates tied the game in the fifth as Dan Lopez walked with one out and then came around to score one batter later with the help of a Stony Brook error. The Seawolves answered right back in the sixth as sophomore Mike Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.) singled to lead off the inning and then scored on a RBI triple from sophomore Rob Dyer (Selden, N.Y.). Junior Steven Mazzurco (Selden, N.Y.) followed with a run-scoring single to give SBU a 3-1 lead and eventually came around to score on two-out RBI single from junior Keith Fier (Armonk, N.Y.). Witkowski finished off the five-run inning with a two-run triple to give the Seawolves a 6-1 advantage. Seton Hall got two of those runs back in the seventh on an A.J. Rusbarsky sacrifice fly and an Edward Brown RBI double but that is as close the Pirates would get. Junior Michael Barbot Bronx, N.Y.) then hurled a scoreless eighth and sophomore Jordan Purington (Westbrook, Maine) followed with a perfect ninth to pick up his sixth save. Sophomore Matt Harloff (Valley Stream, N.Y.) picked up the victory for the Seawolves, allowing just an unearned run and one hit in 4.0 innings of work. Joe DiRocco took the loss for the Pirates, allowing three runs and three hits in the sixth without recording an out.
The Seawolves return to action on Friday, hosting UMBC at University Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. |
