Baseball Falls To Albany 9-6 In Regular Season Finale; Will Take On UMBC In Opening Round of America East Tournament on Thursday
May 17, 2008
Albany, N.Y. - Sophomore Rob Dyer (Selden, N.Y.) and junior Steven Mazzurco (Selden, N.Y.) each drove in two runs but it wasn't enough as the Albany Great Danes defeated the Stony Brook University baseball team 9-6 in both teams regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field. The Seawolves will be the no. 2 seed at the 2008 America East Baseball Championships and will take on third-seeded UMBC on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. SBU will host the four-team double-elimination event which takes place on May 22-24 at Farmingdale State College in Farmingdale, N.Y. The Seawolves jumped to an early lead with three runs in the first highlighted by a two-run double from Mazzurco. But the Great Danes responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first, getting the first run on a Brendan Rowland RBI single. Mike Konstanty drove in the second run of the frame with an RBI fielder's choice and Gary Pitcheralle then tied the game at 3-all as he came home on a Seawolves error. The fourth run of the inning scored on a wild pitch from Stony Brook sophomore starter Jeremy Nowak (Cheektowaga, N.Y.). SBU came right back though with two runs in the second on a two-run single from Dyer. The score remained that way until the seventh when the Great Danes struck for three runs on run-scoring hits from Kyle Crean and Rowland followed by a sacrifice fly from Konstanty. An RBI ground out from freshman Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) in the eighth cut the Seawolves deficit to one at 7-6 but the Great Danes added two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to push their lead back to three. Sean Gregory then hurled a scoreless ninth to secure the series victory for Albany. Casey Walsh picked up the victory in relief for the Great Danes, pitching 6.0 scoreless innings. Nowak took the loss for the Seawolves, giving up four earned runs in 7.0 innings.
