Men's Tennis Falls in Close Match at Florida Gulf Coast, 4-3
March 19, 2008
Fort Myers, Fla. - Stony Brook's men's tennis team came close in its second match in Florida, but in the end it was Florida Gulf Coast that came out on top in a contest that saw three singles matches go to three sets before the Eagles came away with a 4-3 win. Freshmen Artem Baradach (Minsk, Belarus) and Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary) both scored straight sets singles victories for the Seawolves. Florida Gulf Coast swept all three doubles matches to pick up what turned out to be a key point to start the day. Stony Brook stormed back in singles action, however, getting three wins in straight sets. Rummel dropped just two games on his way to a win at the No. 3 position. Freshman Will Allen (Winchester, England) also won in straight sets, taking a 6-4, 6-1 win over Edson Lima at No. 6. Baradach triumphed at No. 1 where he came out on top by a 7-5, 6-2 score over Ricardo Hernandez. All of the other singles matches went to three sets, but it was Florida Gulf Coast that came out on top in all three to provide the Eagles with the margin needed for the win. Stony Brook will wind up its play in Florida with a match against New Jersey Tech that will be played in Naples at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday. Florida Gulf Coast 4, Stony Brook 3 Doubles 1.
