Women's Lacrosse Opens with 18-14 Victory over Colgate

Feb. 16, 2008

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook University's women's lacrosse team started the 2008 season on the right note today when the Seawolves took an 18-14 victory over Colgate at LaValle Stadium on a chilly afternoon. Junior Kaitlin Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored six goals and added a pair of assists to lead Stony Brook to the win.

It was Colgate (0-1) that got on the scoreboard first when it controlled the opening draw and quickly got the ball down the field where Jess Van Deer Meulen found the back of the goal on the first shot of the game. Stony Brook (1-0) got the equalizer less than four minutes later when senior Amy Hallion (Glenelg, Australia) put one in off a pass from senior Brook Souder (Pottstown, Pa.).

After Colgate regained the lead at 2-1 at the 25:22 mark, Stony Brook countered with four straight goals over a 15-minute span. Four different players each tallied their first scores of the season for the Seawolves in that stretch, with freshman Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.), senior Kristen Dupuis (Big Flats, N.Y.), junior Jenna Celano (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Leggio all getting scores that led to a 5-2 SBU advantage. From there Colgate got a pair of goals from Lindsay Pittard, her second and third of the game, over the final six minutes of the half as it cut Stony Brook's advantage down to 8-6 at halftime.

Colgate made it a one-goal game in the early minutes of the second half when Meghan Lawler scored for the Raiders. Stony Brook answered with three straight goals, with Leggio's fourth score of the contest putting SBU up 11-7 at the 21:54 mark.

Molly Caroll's score with 15:25 showing on the clock pulled Colgate back to within a pair at 12-10, but it proved to be as close as the Raiders would get. Stony Brook converted on four free position shots over the next eight minutes and then made it five goals in a row on freshman Melissa Cook's (Bay Shore, N.Y.) score, her second straight, off a Leggio assist that made it 17-10 with 4:59 left.

Colgate scored three straight to cut the deficit to four, but with less than two minutes left in the contest the Raider comeback attempt fell short.

Freshman Jamie Carlson (Glen Cove, N.Y.) made seven saves in goal in her first collegiate game for Stony Brook. Cook finished with three goals and a pair of assists while Celano and Hallion each scored twice. Pittard led Colgate with three goals.

Stony Brook will head west for its next games, traveling to Denver to take on the Pioneers on Friday, February 22 at 1:00 p.m. Mountain time.
