Women's Lacrosse Falls To UMBC, 17-11

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior Diana Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) had a career-high six goals on seven shots but UMBC's Ali Levendusky matched Caroleo with six goals of her own as UMBC led from the start and defeated the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team, 17-11 in an America East conference game. Stony Brook is 5-4, 0-2 while UMBC improves to 3-9, 1-4.

After UMBC scored the first two goals of the game, freshman Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) helped Stony Brook get on the board with her 20th goal of the season coming off a free position shot. Levendusky and UMBC answered with two straight goals to give UMBC a 4-1 lead. Stony Brook cut the lead to 4-3 following goals from senior Elizabeth Montreuil (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and Caroleo.

Senior Jenna Celano (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored on a free position shot with 7:42 left in the first half to make the score, 6-4 which was the closest the Seawolves got the rest of the afternoon.

UMBC scored the next five goals, spanning over 16 minutes of game action while taking an 11-4 lead. Junior Kimberly Quartier (Cicero, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the season and Caroleo had Stony Brook's next three goals as it got within three, 11-8 with 15:56 to play. But UMBC answered with five straight goals over 5:30 minutes to lead 16-8. Caroleo had two of the three final scores for Stony Brook.

For Stony Brook, Cook totaled two goals on the afternoon. Junior Kaitlin Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y.) had three assists and six ground balls.
 

 

Kelly Burgoyne added three goals for UMBC. Along with Levendusky's six goals, she also picked up six ground balls.

Stony Brook returns to action on Saturday afternoon at 12 pm when it hosts #14 New Hampshire at 12 pm.
