Caroleo, Leggio Lead Women's Lacrosse To 18-12 Win Over Binghamton

Vestal, N.Y. - Senior Diana Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) had three of her game-high five goals in a decisive seven-goal spurt in the second half to lead the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team to an 18-12 victory against Binghamton on Saturday evening. Stony Brook picks up its first America East victory of the season and is 6-6, 1-4. Binghamton is 4-10, 0-5.

After Binghamton scored the first goal of the game, Stony Brook answered with three goals just 43 seconds apart. Caroleo tallied her first goal of the game and junior Kaitlin Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored two to give the Seawolves a 3-1 lead. Binghamton tied the game at three but goals from senior Jenna Celano (Farmingdale, N.Y.), Leggio and freshman Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) gave Stony Brook a 6-3 lead it would not relinquish.

Cook had two more goals in the half as Stony Brook led 9-4 with 9:51 left. Two Binghamton goals put the game at 9-6 entering the locker rooms.

Binghamton would score the first two goals of the second half before Stony Brook put the game away. Caroleo scored her 30th, 31st and 32nd goal of the season just 2:41 apart. Junior Amy Hallion (Glenelg, Australia) scored her two goals during the spurt as the Seawolves had a 16-8 lead with 14:20 to play.

Caroleo and senior Brooke Souder (Pottstown, Pa.) scored the final two goals for Stony Brook which totaled 31 points on the evening.

Caroleo finished with eight points (5g, 3a). Leggio had added six assists to go along with her hat trick and Cook had four goals and two assists.
 

 

Binghamton was led by Leanne Musso's three goals. Lisa Illig added two goals.

Stony Brook returns to home to face Marist on Wednesday afternoon. First draw control is scheduled for 3 pm.
