Cahill, Cook Come Up Big in Seawolves' 9-7 Win Over UAlbany

Albany, N.Y. - Sophomore Mickey Cahill (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made 11 saves and freshman Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) had a team-high four points to lead the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team to a crucial 9-7 win over UAlbany in an America East conference game. With the win, Stony Brook moves to 8-6, 2-4 while Albany is 8-8, 2-4. After the Great Danes scored the game's first two goals, senior Diana Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) got the Seawolves on the board with a free-position goal to make the score 2-1 with 17:01 left in the first half. Kayla Best's followed with a goal for Albany but Stony Brook took the momentum back in a big way, scoring the final five goals of the half. Junior Jenna Celano's (Farmingdale, N.Y.) unassisted goal tied the game at 3 with 7:31 left in the half. Junior Amy Hallion (Glenelg, Australia) had two goals and junior Kaitlin Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored with seven seconds left in the first half to give the Seawolves a three-goal lead. Kayla Best opened the second half scoring with her third goal of the game before Stony Brook scored three in a row. Cook (2) and freshman Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.) gave the visitors a 9-4 lead. Albany scored the game's final three goals. Seniors Lauren Drepanis (Nanuet, N.Y.) and Katelin Billups (Lake Oswego, Ore.) each picked up four ground balls.
Stony Brook returns home for the final game of the 2008 season against Hofstra on Tuesday afternoon at 4 pm. The game against the Pride is also the final game for seniors Diana Caroleo, Kristen Dupuis, Katelin Billups, Brooke Souder, Elizabeth Montreuil and Lauren Drepanis. Tuesday's game is part of a doubleheader with the men's team which is Lacrosse for Autism day. |
