Softball Loses Two Close Games in Final Day of Stony Brook Invitational

March 22, 2008

Darmouth Box Score

Quinnipiac Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Dartmouth's Devin Lindsay allowed just one-hit in seven innings of work as Stony Brook lost their first game of the day Saturday, 2-0 at University Field. In game two, an RBI single in the sixth inning by Quinnipiac was the difference in a 2-1 Stony Brook loss. With the two losses the Seawolves even their record at 9-9-1.

Sophomore Alyssa Struzenberg (Cooper City, Fla.) struggled with her control issuing five walks in 3.2 innings against Dartmouth. Three of those walks came in succession in the third inning, loading the bases. A single to right center by the Big Green's Ashley Gleason drove in the only two runs of the game.

Senior Ashley Westphal (Huntington Beach, Calif.) recorded the only hit of the day for the Seawolves, with a bloop single over the second basemen's head in the sixth inning.

Sophomore Casey Jacobs (Davie, Fla.) pitched well in relief, allowing just one hit in 3.1 innings.

Stony Brook struck early in game two, with junior Kelsi Fanelli (Audubon, N.J.) drawing a walk, advancing to second on a wild pitch and then scoring on an RBI single by junior Marissa Fleury (Mahopac, N.Y.).

Quinnipiac answered in the second scoring an unearned run on a RBI single by Katie Allendorfer. The Bobcats had a great scoring opportunity in the fourth, with the bases loaded and only one out. However, an attempted sacrifice fly to center was ruined by a great throw from Fanelli to throw out the potential go-ahead run at the plate.

A leadoff walk in the sixth by freshman Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) proved costly for the Seawolves, as Quinnipiac was able to score their second run of the game on an RBI single.

Stony Brook threatened in the top of the seventh, with runners on first and third with two outs, but a hard-hit line drive to the shortstop by junior Kelly Oberto (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) ended the game. Matthes, pitched all six innings for Stony Brook and was credited with the loss, dropping her to 2-4 on the season.

Stony Brook finished the Invitational with a 1-3 record. Quinnipiac, which finished 3-1, was named the winner of the Invitational.

The Seawolves will be home again on Tuesday, with a doubleheader against Rhode Island starting at 2:00 p.m.
