Softball Loses Final Regular Season Game
May 4, 2008 Burlington, Vt. - Vermont's Elena Rizza went 2-for-4 with three RBI as the Catamounts beat Stony Brook softball, 7-5, in the final regular season game of the year. Stony Brook ends the regular season with a record of 30-21-1 (13-8 America East) and will enter the America East Championship as the No. 3 seed. After Vermont scored once in the bottom of the first, Stony Brook rallied in the third with three runs of its own. Sophomore Kendall Blumenthal (Frederick, Md.) started the inning off with a single to center and later scored on an RBI single by junior Kelsi Fanelli (Audubon, N.J.). Junior Marissa Fleury (Mahopac, N.Y.) then doubled in two runs to give the Seawolves a 3-1 lead. That did not last long, however, as Vermont pushed four runs across in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single to center by Rizza. She drove in a run in the next inning as well when she singled through the right side. The Catamounts added another run in the fourth to open up a 7-3 advantage on the Seawolves. While Stony Brook did score twice in the fifth on an RBI single by sophomore Jade Clare (Federal Way, Wash.), Vermont's Aimee Kern retired the Seawolves in order in the seventh inning to put the game away, 7-5. The University at Albany completed its three game sweep of Boston University today, which gives the Great Danes the regular-season conference title. Albany will be hosting this year's conference tournament which starts May 8th.
