Swimming and Diving Teams Wrap-Up Their Seasons at America East Championships

Orono, Maine - Stony Brook's men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished their 2007-2008 season today as the America East Championships came to close at the University of Maine. Both teams were competitive throughout the four-day championship, with the men finishing fourth overall and the women placing seventh. Freshman Lukasz Ochmanski (Lodz, Poland) won his second event of the championship, touching first in the men's 1,650-yard freestyle (15:50.67). Freshman Trevor Laehy (Irvine, Calif.) also competed in the 1,650-yard freestyle, finishing 10th (17:06.82). The men's relay team had another strong showing, finishing second in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Freshman Eric Gaffey (Bohemia, N.Y.), junior Michael MacDonald (Monroe Township, N.J.), senior Dan Piastuck (Holbrook, N.Y.) and senior Jonathan Eldor (Givat Elah, Israel) completed the event with a time of 3:05.71. Gaffey and MacDonald both had individual top-10 performances in the 100-yard freestyle; Gaffey touched fifth (46.97) while MacDonald placed seventh (47.06). Seawolf sophomore Ray Sato (Eastchester, N.Y.) also had a top-10 finish for Stony Brook, touching 10th in the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.85). On the women's side, freshman Anastasiya Kiryushkina (Moscow, Russia) had the top individual finish, touching eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.21). Senior Courtney Teague (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also swam well for the Seawolves, placing ninth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.61.
The women's top finish came from the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Teague, freshman Maja Gudelj (Split, Croatia), senior Nyisha Green-Washington (Highland Mills, N.Y.) and sophomore Rebecca Sayles (Calgary, Alberta) who placed fifth overall (3:35.97).
