Wijeratne Earns America East Honor

April 8, 2008

Cambridge, Mass. - Senior Sandy Wijeratne (Melbourne, Australia) has been named the America East Performer of the Week in women's tennis the league announced today. It is the second time this season she has been named to the honor. Wijeratne was a key component to a week that saw Stony Brook go 3-0, including a conference win over Albany.

Wijeratne was undefeated in both singles and doubles play during the week, helping the Seawolves extend their season-best win streak to four matches. She started the week with a hard-fought 8-6 win at doubles against Fordham that gave SBU the doubles point in that match. Wijerante was even better in her other two doubles matches of the week as she and her partner dropped just one game in each. In singles play she won all three matches by identical 6-3, 6-0 scores to run her season record to 16-5 and has now won six of her last seven singles matches. With one more win she will set a Stony Brook school record for singles victories in a career.
