Prairie View 63, Texas Southern 53

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas -- Michael Griffin scored 19 points to lead Prairie View A&M to a 63-53 win over Texas Southern on Saturday night.

The Panthers (12-9, 7-3 Southwestern) went into halftime up 37-28 and hung on the rest of the way, leading by as much as 13 early in the second period.

They shot 44 percent from the field and 58 percent from the free throw line. Darnell Hugee added 13 points and Duwan Kornegay scored 10.

The Tigers (11-11, 7-3) dominated in the paint with a 40-22 scoring advantage, but made just 9 of 21 tries from the free-throw line.

Travele Jones led the Tigers with 16 points and Marc Ellis added 11.

Grambling State 65, Southern 59

GRAMBLING, La. -- Donald Qualls scored 19 points and Ariece Perkins had a double-double to lead Grambling to a 65-59 victory over Southern U. on Saturday.

Qualls hit four 3-pointers, and Perkins had 14 points and 12 rebounds as the Tigers (5-13, 3-7 Southwestern Athletic Conference) ended a five-game losing streak.

Grambling used a 16-5 run sandwiched around halftime to take a 43-29 lead with 16:55 remaining. Qualls, Perkins, Rupert Rose and Greg Dillon hit 3-pointers during the run.

Southern (4-18, 2-8) cut the deficit to 58-55 on Tony McGilveary's free throw with 58 seconds to play, but Qualls and Perkins each hit three free throws to push the lead to 64-55 with 21 seconds left.

Madut Bol scored 11 points for Southern, which is 1-7 in its past eight games.

Mississippi Valley State 82, Alabama State 71

ITTA BENA, Miss. (AP) -- Shannon Behling scored 19 points to pace Mississippi Valley State to an 82-71 win over Alabama State on Saturday.

Behling shot 9-for-10 from the free throw line and added seven rebounds for the Delta Devils (6-17, 5-5 Southwestern Athletic Conference), who have won two games in a row. Cor-J Cox added 15 points for MVSU. The Delta Devils beat the Hornets for the second time this season, as they previously defeated Alabama State 76-73 on Jan. 9.

MVSU led 35-26 at halftime, and used two separate 6-0 runs in the second half to take a 49-32 lead with 13:29 remaining. The Hornets couldn't recover, and got no closer than seven points.

Menji Mundadi scored 28 points to lead Alabama State (9-12, 6-4), while Christopher Duncan scored a career-high 18 points in the loss.

Jackson State 85, Alcorn State 64

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- Garrison Johnson scored 27 points and Jackson State defeated Alcorn State 85-64 on Saturday night.

Johnson, last week's SWAC player of the week, has scored in double figures in 12 straight games and reached the 1,000-point mark for his career last week.

De'Suan Dixon scored 15 points and Tyrone Hanson added 10 for the Tigers (11-11, 9-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference), who have won five in a row and 10 of their past 11.

The Tigers jumped out to a 25-8 lead and were never challenged. A layup by Christian Williams gave the Tigers their biggest lead at 70-34 with 12:20 remaining.

Jackson State shot 45.6 percent (26-for-57) and outrebounded Alcorn State 47-33. The win completes a season sweep in the series for the Tigers, who beat the Braves 63-51 on Jan. 27.

Brandon Rogers was the only player in double figures for Alcorn State (0-23, 0-10) with 13 points.

UAPB 62, Alabama A&M 55

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AP) -- Arkansas-Pine Bluff jumped out to a 12-0 lead and overcame 18 turnovers Saturday en route to a 62-55 victory over Alabama A&M.

Savalace Townsend had 15 points and Tavaris Washington 12 for the Golden Lions (7-14, 7-3 SWAC). Lebaron Weathers added 11 points and 15 rebounds.

Cornelius Hester led Alabama A&M (7-11, 4-6) with 20 points.

Townsend hit two 3-pointers in Pine Bluff's early 12-0 run. The Bulldogs responded with a 15-6 run over the next eight minutes to cut the lead to 18-15. But the Lions extended the margin to 29-20 at halftime and led by as many as 19 points in the second half.

Pine Bluff overcame the 18 turnovers by outrebounding Alabama A&M 43-27.
