Alabama State rolled to an impressive 34-6 conference victory over Mississippi Valley, and Jackson State and Alcorn State also recorded wins on opening day. Prairie View squeaked by Texas Southern 16-14 as well.
Alabama State 34, Mississippi Valley State 6
Montgomery, Ala. - Alabama State (1-0, 1-0) opened its season with an impressive 34-6 conference win over divisional rival Mississippi Valley State (0-1, 0-1). Devin Dominguez threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns for the Hornets, who built a 24-0 lead at one point and led 24-3 at the intermission.
Alcorn State 50, Langston 27
Alcorn State, Miss. - Alcorn State (1-0) exploded in the second half and put away Langston (1-1) with three defensive returns for touchdowns. The Braves, who led 20-12 at the half, got interception returns for scores from Jamison Smith and Josh Cragin. Stephen Howard also returned a fumble for a score for Alcorn.
Jackson State 32, Delta State 17
Jackson, Miss. - Jackson State quarterback Casey Therriault passed for 404 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Tigers (1-0) past Delta State (0-1). Anthony Mayes caught four passes for 118 yards.
Louisiana Tech 20, Grambling 6
Shreveport, La. - Louisiana Tech (1-0) won the inaugural meeting between these two schools in the Port City Classic, 20-6. Grambling (0-1) gained just 260 yards on the game and had five possessions inside Bulldog territory only result in six points.
Tennessee State 27, Alabama A&M 14
Nashville, Tenn. - Tennessee State (1-0)ran back the opening kickoff for a touchdown en route to the Tigers building a 27-0 halftime lead before Alabama A&M (0-1) scored a couple fourth quarter touchdowns to make the final score seem closer than the game was.
UTEP 31, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 10
El Paso, Texas - UTEP (1-0) scored 17 unanswered points in the second half as the Miners pulled away to the 31-10 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-1). Raymond Webber caught 10 passes for 123 yards to lead the Golden Lions. Josh Bordreaux threw for 202 yards and a score for UAPB.
Prairie View A&M 16, Texas Southern 14
Houston, Texas - Marcus White had a 72-yard interception return for a touchdown and Prairie View A&M beat Texas Southern 16-14 on Sunday.
The Panthers (1-0) had just 148 yards of offense but their defense picked off Arvell Nelson four times. White's return in the third quarter made it 14-7 and Raheem Cardwell recorded a safety early in the final period.
Nelson threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to William Osborne in the second quarter, tying it at 7, and Marcus Wright added a 9-yard TD run with 7:56 left for Texas Southern (0-1).
Wright had 18 carries for 92 yards and Osborne finished with seven catches for 73 yards.
Jonathan Troast found Shaun Stephens for a 20-yard TD pass with 9:39 left in the first half, giving Prairie View a 7-0 lead.
