Grambling State 69, Southern 58

GRAMBLING, La. - Despite a big night from Southern's Hannah Kador, Grambling State picked up a key 69-58 SWAC win over rival Southern.

Kristen Harper's 18 points paced GSU (5-12, 4-6), Secrett Anderson chipped in 10.

Kador kept SU (13-7, 7-3) close with 21 points and seven rebounds. Ashley Auguerson added 13 points.

Although they shot a scorching 71% in the first half, Grambling State - due to turnovers - only managed a 34-32 lead at the break.

The Tigers trailed by one with 7:45 remaining, and Wymeka Randle scored inside to give GSU a lead. Harper drilled a three-pointer a couple of possessions later and Grambling State clinched the game with solid free throw shooting down the stretch.

Prairie View 58, Texas Southern 49

PRAIRIE VIEW, Tx - Prairie View shook off a cold shoooting start and rode a strong defensive effort to pick up a 58-49 win over Texas Southern.

Latara Darrett led the Panthers (12-7, 9-1) with 27 points. Candice Thomas added 11 points and eight rebounds.

Gabrielle Rosigi and Inisha Daughtry paced TSU (9-12, 6-4) with 12 points each.

After shooting a paltry 21%, PV found themselves down 24-18 at halftime.

However, after their visit to the lockerroom, the Panthers shooting heating up and their defense locked down as they hit 52% of their shots and held TSU to 29%.

In the second half, Prairie View more than doubled the first half scoring as they put up 40 points while rallying for the win.

Alabama A&M 57, UAPB 55

PINE BLUFF, Ark. - Katrich Williams led the Alabama A&M (10-9, 6-4) with 22 points in the 57-55 road victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (4-16, 3-7). Williams went 6-for-9 from the field, including a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. Nadra Robertson and Whiquitta Tobar chipped in with seven points each.

Pine Bluff held as much as a seven point advantage, 42-34, at the 12:41 mark. Eight straight unanswered gave A&M its first advantage since the 17:54. The Golden Lions retook the lead off a free throw by Shay Holmes. UAPB held a slim three point advantage with 1:30 remaining in regulation. A Williams basket at :58 cut it to 55-54. A steal and a fast break layup by Williams on the next possession gave the Bulldogs a one point edge, 56-55. A Tobar free throw within the last few seconds ending scoring for the game.

For the Golden Lions, Holmes tallied a double-double with 19 points and 12 boards in 34 minutes of action. Laquisha Slaton had nine points on the night.

As a team, A&M shot 53.8 percent from the field (21-for-39), while holding UAPB to a 30 percent clip (18-for-60). The Bulldogs also scored 26 points off 24 Golden Lion miscues.

Jackson State 49, Alcorn State 45

JACKSON, Miss. - Jackson State (3-17, 2-8) ended a four game losing streak by defeating Alcorn State Lady Braves (5-13, 5-5) 49-45 for Pack the House night at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center. The Lady Tigers are the reigning Pack the House champions for the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Three Lady Tigers scored in double-figures en route to the four point win. Phenicia Taylor led JSu with 18 points on 7-7 shooting from the field and 4-4 shooting from the line. Tiffany Haggen added 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Shaneese McLin came off the bench to add 10 points and five rebounds.

Amanda Davidson came off the bench to score a game-high 19 points.

Jackson State jumped out to an early 12-5 lead over the first six minutes of play. By the 8:56 mark in the first half JSU increased its lead to 18-7. At halftime the Lady Tigers held a 49-45 advantage. In the second half JSU held on to it's four point in the lead by outscoring Alcorn State 24-21. Jackson State outrebounded Alcorn 43-22 and shot a season high 57.6 percent from the field, while holding the Lady Braves to 28.8 percent shooting.

Alabama State 65, Mississippi Valley State 63 (OT)

ITTA BENA, Miss.--The Alabama State University Lady Hornets rallied from an 18-point deficit in the second half to force overtime before finishing off the impressive comeback with a 65-63 overtime victory over Mississippi Valley State Saturday at the Harrison HPER Complex.

The Lady Hornets (8-11, 5-5 SWAC) were led by freshman Qourtni Fambro, who scored a career-high 16 points. Senior Briana Thomas added 13 points and five rebounds, while Tanika Jackson registered her ninth double-double of the year finishing with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

The Devilettes got 22 points from Ashley Brown followed by Ka'Nesha Smith with 11 points and six rebounds.

In the first half Mississippi Valley led by as many as 16 points as poor shooting hurt the Lady Hornets. ASU shot just 23.1 percent from the field in the opening half while MVSU connected at a 40.0 percent clip.

The Devilettes jumped in front by seven through the first five minutes of play, before ASU battled back to pull within two points at the 12:11 mark.

Valley then went on an 8-0 run to build a double-digit advantage. The Devilettes continued to increase the lead and held a 14-point edge, 34-20, at the half.

MVSU pushed its lead to 18 points early in the second half but the Lady Hornets refused to quit battling. Free throws and a three-point shot from the t0p of the arc by Fambro pulled the ASU within six. The Lady Hornets rally continued and culminated when Fambro drilled a trey with just four seconds remaining to tie the game at 55-55 and force overtime.

The two teams traded baskets through the first couple minutes of overtime. Briana Thomas sank a layup that marked the final tie of the contest, 62-62, before a quick reverse layup by Erica Henderson pushed the Lady Hornets past the Devilettes by one, 63-64. Tandria Milton sealed the victory for ASU with a free throw in the closing seconds.
