The strong inside play of Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) helped pave the way for a big SCAC win for the Southwestern University women's basketball team as they defeated Hendrix College 60-50 in Georgetown, TX on Saturday (Feb. 16) evening. The Warriors started out hot, jumping to a quick 9-2 lead over SU but the Pirates answered with eight-straight points for a 10-9 lead at the 11:01 mark. The score stayed close for the remainder of the half with neither team leading by more than two and HC taking a 25-24 lead at the intermission. In the second half, the game stayed tight with the Pirates leading 30-29 with 13:34 left. Four minutes later, Southwestern had gone on a 10-1 run for a 10-point lead. Hendrix would get no closer than six with the Pirates building their lead as high as 19. Thomas, a senior center, posted a double-double for the Bucs. She scored 16 points on 6-10 shooting from the floor and 4-4 from the free throw line. On the boards, she pulled down 10 rebounds with five of them coming on the offensive end. Sophomore Narisa Trammell (Godley, TX/Godley HS) added nine points for the Pirates along with three steals and senior Amanda Gordon (Houston, TX/Bellaire HS) scored eight. Gordon and Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) each totaled seven rebounds in the game. SU got 34 points in the paint and made good on offensive rebounds by getting 17 second chance points. The Bucs held a slight 38-36 edge in rebounds and also forced the Warriors in to 28 turnovers. The Pirates shot 39.6 percent (21-53) from the floor and connected on 72.7 percent (16-22) from the charity stripe. The Pirates improve to 12-11 on the season and 6-7 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. With the win, they moved past Hendrix in to third place in the SCAC Western Division. The loss dropped Hendrix to 13-11, 6-8 in the conference. The Pirates take to the road for the final two games, beginning on Friday (Feb. 22) in Colorado Springs, CO against the Colorado College Tigers at 6:00 pm.
