Texas A&M University-Commerce junior Dean Laing is in fourth place overall (third among collegiate competitors) with 3,438 points after the first day of the decathlon of the David Noble Relays at Angelo State University.

Laing recorded a season-best in all four events, including a 5-8 1/2 clearance in the high jump, a jump of 21-0 1/2 in the long jump, an 11.30 in the 100-meter dash, a 40-1 1/4 feet throw in the shot put, a 50.67 in the 400-meter dash. Among the competitors, he was second in the shot put and the 400-meter dash.

Heading into Friday's final five events, Laing trails by 38 points, NCAA All-American Mike Stowe of Grand Valley State (3,476) and by 54 points, Jake Halfmann the leading decathlete in the Lone Star Conference of Angelo State (3,492). Stephen Moore, one of the nation's top decathletes, leads the field with 4,127 points.
