Lions Fall on Tip In with 1.5 Seconds Left to Cameron

A tip in with 1.5 seconds by Leslie Malone of Cameron led the visiting Aggies to a 93-91 overtime over host Texas A&M University-Commerce.
The tip-in broke the seventh tie in the regular season finale for the Lions and spoiled a senior day for five A&M-Commerce seniors - Leonard Bishop, Derrick Darkis, Lance Jackson, Scooby Johnson and Kevin Widemond. All five had a role a significant impact in the contest. Head Coach Sam Walker elected to start all five and scored 77 of the Lions' 91 points. A&M-Commerce saw its three-game winning streak end and the Lions move into a tie for third place tie in the LSC North Division with Northeastern State as they fall to 12-15 overall and 7-5 in the LSC North. Cameron, who had lost five of their last six, was led by a game-high 33 points from Leslie Malone to raise the Aggies' record to 6-20 and 4-7 in the LSC North. Malone also had a game-high 11 rebounds to lead Cameron and four Aggies in double digits. He was joined in double figures by Dave Smith - 15, Kallan Glasgow - 13 and Maurice Cubit - 11. The Aggies bounced back from a 37.5% shooting in the first half to make 22 of their last 38 field goals for 57.9%. On the contrary, A&M-Commerce shot 44.8% in the first half and made 22 of their last 45 for 48.9% in the loss. Both teams squandered double digit leads in the contest that featured seven ties and five lead changes. A&M-Commerce was in the lead until Glasgow hit a lay up with 14:35 left in regulation to tie the game at 47. Before the first tie, A&M-Commerce held the advantage since the opening tip. The Lions extended its lead to as much as 12 in the opening 8:42, 22-10, when Jacobi Jackson hit a jumper.
An 18-5 run by the visitors put the Aggies in front 28-27 with 4:58 left in the first half. Widemond hit his third 3 pointer and Rashad Brown hit a free throw to put Lions back in front for the remainder of the opening half. After the Glasgow lay up, Cameron was in the lead until Bishop scored his first two points of the game on a lay up to tie the contest at 75 with 2:02 remaining in the game. Both teams exchanged baskets twice, tying the score at 79 with 39 seconds left. With the score tied, the Aggies' Greg Morgan drove to the basket and the Lions' were whistled for a foul. Morgan went to the free-throw line with six seconds remaining; however, he missed on both attempts. A running jumper by Widemond with time winding down in regulation came up short and sent the two teams to overtime. In the extra period, Johnson put the Lions in front on a 3-point play, 82-79, with 4:38 remaining. The Lions were in the lead until a 3-point play by Morgan tied the game at 86 and for the sixth time. Malone put the Aggies in front on a 3-pointer, 91-88, with 1:26 remaining; however, Widemond tied it with 35 seconds left for the seventh and final tie. With two seconds remaining, Morgan drove to the hoop and Malone snuck in behind a pair of Lions' defenders for the game-winning tip in. Next for A&M-Commerce is a trip to the Lone Star Conference Tournament, however, the Lions will have to wait until the conclusion of the regular season for the remainder of the conference foes for an opponent to be determined. Off the court in the contest, the Texas A&M University-Commerce athletic department honored outgoing President Dr. Keith McFarland for his contributions to Lions athletics. In addition, the athletic department recognized its senior athletic trainers and cheerleaders in halftime activities. |
