The venerable Butch Flores will serve as an assistant coach at Texas A&M International University this season. He has been a fixture of the Laredo baseball scene since his All-District playing days at Martin High School 40 years ago. Flores takes on the challenge at TAMIU after serving as an assistant coach at Laredo Community College the last three seasons. Prior to his tenure at LCC, Flores was an educator and coach with the Laredo Independent School District for 33 years. After earning a bachelor's degree from Pan American University in 1971 Flores returned to Laredo, playing semi-pro baseball until joining the Nixon High School coaching staff in 1978. He would build the Mustangs into a baseball power after taking over as head coach in 1982. Flores compiled a 383-140 career record in 19 seasons at Nixon. The Mustangs made 17 playoff appearances; winning three district titles and seven bi-district titles with two regional semifinal appearances. Flores has continued his affiliation with high school baseball by serving as co-director of the Border Olympics Tournament for the last several years. Flores and Berta Flores have been married 35 years. They have two grown children, Jessica and Luciano. Jessica is a teacher with the Laredo Independent School District and Luciano is an accountant with a local bank. |
