UT-Permian Basin swept Texas A&M International University in Heartland Conference doubleheader action on Sunday in Odessa. The Falcons clinched a 3-1 series win against the Dustdevils by winning the opener 3-2 before cruising to a 13-2 win the series finale. TAMIU took a 2-0 lead in the opener in the top of the first on a bases loaded walk to Ryanne Chapman and an error by the Falcon shortstop that allowed Samantha García to score. The Dustdevils would manage only two hits after the first inning and UTPB got the win with one run in the first and two runs in the fourth inning. Courtney Smith (1-7) took the loss despite allowing only one earned run on six hits in a complete game 6.0 inning outing. UTPB (8-20, 3-9 Heartland) jumped out to a 13-0 lead after three innings in the second game. TAMIU (12-20, 8-4 Heartland) would score one run apiece in the fourth and fifth innings but the game ended after the fifth in compliance with the conference 10-run rule. Victoria Beltrán (7-6) was tagged with the loss. She allowed 12 earned runs on 10 hits in a 2.2 inning outing. TAMIU returns to action next weekend with a home Heartland Conference series against Incarnate Word. The Dustdevils and Cardinals will play doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday at Gateway Field. |
