April 24, 2008
PHILADELPHIA - Junior Candis Kelley became only the second female in TCU history to win the women's shot put title at the Penn Relays on Thursday.
"I thought we had a good respectable day," said head coach Darryl Anderson. "Candis Kelley was definitely the highlight today winning the shot put. She improved her position on the regional qualifying list and did well." Kelley captured the women's shot put title with a throw of 51 feet, 3 ¾ inches. She currently has the seventh best throw in the Midwest region. With the win, Kelley won the first shot put title at the Penn Relays since 1992 and became only the third individual in TCU history to win a shot put title in Philadelphia. "It's an honor to be only the second female in TCU history to win the shot here at Penn. I had a good day overall," said Kelley. Junior Meaghan Peoples opened the Flyin' Frogs day at Franklin Field by clocking an NCAA regional qualifying and seasonal best time of 1:00.56 in the 400-meter hurdles. The Weatherford native, who is now in the top 50 of the NCAA standings, finished second in her heat and fourth overall on Thursday. The women's 4x100 unit of Jessica Clarke, Brittany Blaylock, Kishelle Paul and Virgil Hodge blazed to a first-place finish in heat No. 3 to place fifth overall and advance to Friday's Championship of America final. The unit clocked an NCAA regional qualifying time of 44.34 seconds. The women's 4x400, consisting of Clarke, Blaylock, Shekila Wilkinson and Paul recorded a fourth-place finish in heat No. 1 with an NCAA regional qualifying and seasonal best time of 3:37.35. "The women's 4x100 ran well and I am pleased that the 4x400 will get another opportunity to compete in the consolation," said Anderson. Finally, Neidra Covington led TCU in the long jump by leaping 19 feet, 8 inches to place sixth overall. JimAnne Hejny followed in ninth-place with a jump of 19 feet, 5 ¼ inches. "Neidra competed well today. She got sixth overall and that not is to bad at the Penn Relays," said Anderson. "All-in-all, we have to come back tomorrow and compete well after a solid first day." TCU will continue action tomorrow at the Penn Relays.
