WALNUT, Calif. - Sophomore Festus Kigen placed second overall in the men's 5000 meters on Thursday by crushing the NCAA regional qualifying mark at the Mt. SAC Relays.

"Festus ran awesome tonight. He really ran a smooth and controlled race," said distance coach Shawn Winget. "I am really proud of him. He did exactly what we talked about."

Kigen, a sophomore from Eldoret, Kenya, clocked a regional qualifying time of 14:03.61 in the university division of the 5000 meters to place second behind Jose Mireles of Mexico, who posted a winning time of 14:02.43.

Kigen's time is currently the second fastest time in the Mountain West Conference and ranked in the top 20 of the NCAA. His NCAA regional qualifying mark also currently sits as the seventh fastest time in the Midwest Region.
