TCU powers its way to 12-8 win at Texas State
April 2, 2008
SAN MARCOS, Texas - A career night for right fielder Chris Ellington helped the TCU Horned Frogs rally for a 12-8 victory. TCU scored at least one run in the third through seventh innings to erase an early 3-0 deficit. Ellington finished the night 4-for-5 with two home runs, one double and six runs driven in. After retiring the first two batters with ease, TCU starter Paul Gerrish fell victim to three straight Bobcat hits. Laurn Randell started the two-out rally and Paul Goldschmidt put Texas State in front with a long home run to straight away center field to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. Texas State tacked on another two-out run in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0, but TCU put together a two-out rally of its own to get the game tied up in the top of the third. Clint Arnold started things with a one-out single. Bobcat starter Kane Holbrooks was able to pick up the second out, but Steve Ellington kept the inning alive with a base hit through the left side. Continuing his hot hitting, Chris Ellington tied the game with one swing of the bat as he deposited the pitch over the left center field fence. The see-saw battle took off in the bottom of the third inning as Texas State regained the lead with two runs on three hits. Trent Appleby came on in relief of Gerrish and shut the door on the Bobcats to keep the deficit at two runs, 5-3. The two teams traded runs in the fourth inning, keeping it a two-run game. Corey Steglich doubled to lead off the inning and scored when Bryan Kervin bounced into a double play. But the Bobcats responded with another two-out run on a double from Randell. TCU took its first lead of the contest with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Bryan Holaday singled to lead off the inning. Steve Ellington was hit by the pitch to put two on for Chris Ellington, who delivered a run-scoring double. Carpenter put the Frogs on top with a two-run single. Chris Anagnostou put a zero on the board to preserve the Frog lead at one, 7-6, after five. A run in the seventh extended the Frog lead to two and a four-run seventh inning busted the game open for the Frogs. The Frogs hit a pair of two-run home runs in the inning as Chris Ellington picked up his second of the game and Pharr connected for his first career home run. Trent Appleby (1-1) earned the win in relief to pick up his first career victory. He allowed one run on two hits in two innings of work. Anagnostou was outstanding in two innings of work as he limited the Bobcats to just two hits, while striking out two. Texas State tacked on a run each in the seventh and eighth to account for the final score. All told, TCU pounded out 17 hits, six of which went for extra bases. The Frogs improve to 16-12 on the season. They will return home to host a three-game Mountain West Conference series with Air Force this weekend. Friday's opener is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start at Lupton Stadium. Tyler Lockwood will take the mound for the Frogs in search of his third win of the season. Game Notes:
