Bryant's record-setting performance leads Utes past TCU, 74-58
Salt Lake City - Senior Johnnie Bryant connected on eight three-pointers - including five in the second half of action - to set a Utah single-game record en route to leading the University of Utah to a 74-58 victory over TCU at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City on Saturday.
Bryant finished the game with a career-high 24 points while setting a second record on the afternoon with 14 three-point field goal attempts. The Utah guard also finished with four rebounds and one assist in 27 minutes of action. While Bryant was dominating the Frogs from the outside, Utah center Luke Nevill was having his way with the Purple and White down low as the 7-1 senior finished with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go along with six rebounds and two blocked shots in 30 minutes of court time. After dropping three straight conference games, the Utes came out on fire against the Frogs as they jumped out to a 10-0 lead at the 16:30 mark after Tyler Kepkay connected on a three-pointer. The Utes upped their lead to 17 points at 20-3 with 12:12 left before intermission after Bryant connected on his first trey of the afternoon. Utah held a double-digit lead over the Frogs for the remainder of the first half and the closest that the Purple and White were able to get to the Utes' lead was 11 points after a Jason Ebie (Houston, Texas/Alief Elsik H.S.) jumper at the 1:00 mark cut the deficit to 35-24. In the second half of action, the Frogs were able to cut the lead down to eight points at 40-32 with 15:30 remaining in the game after Brent Hackett (Fort Worth, Texas/Southwest H.S.) connected on a fade-away jumper on the baseline.
However - the Utes quickly went on a 10-0 run to up their lead to 50-32 with 12:47 left in the game after Bryant connected on drain trey after trey for the home squad. The Frogs were never able to get within 11 points of the lead for the remainder of the game as the Utes claimed the 74-58 victory over the Frogs on their home court.
Hackett finished with a Frog-high 15 points on 4-of-9 shooting to go along with a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe. The TCU guard also added two rebounds, two steals and one assists in 34 minutes of action.
