Frogs look to continue momentum at Morris Williams Intercollegiate
April 4, 2008
The TCU men's golf program will look to continue its momentum after capturing the gold medal in its last outing as the Horned Frogs will travel to Austin, Texas, for the 42nd-Annual Morris Williams Intercollegiate at the University of Texas Golf Club beginning on Monday (Apr. 7). The Frogs - who will enter the tournament ranked 47th in the country by GolfStat and 50th by Golfweek - dominated the National Invitational Tournament from the opening hole as the Purple and White were able to build an 11-stroke lead at the end of the first round of action. After securing a nine-stroke lead at the end of the second round - the Frogs were able to hold off a surging Kent State squad en route to securing their second tournament victory of the season and 22nd team title under TCU head men's golf coach Bill Montigel. At the National Invitational Tournament - the Frogs had three separate golfers lead the tournament at the conclusion of the first two rounds as Jordan Woolf (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington H.S.) and Robby Ormand (Austin, Texas/James Bowie H.S.) controlled the leaderboard after the first round while Franklin Corpening (Fort Worth, Texas/Paschal H.S.) led the field after the first 36 holes of action. Corpening was the Frogs' top golfer at the National Invitational Tournament as he finished fourth overall with a three-round tally of six-under-par 210 (69-68-73) - including a pair of sub-70 rounds. The TCU senior has collected four top-15 finishes - including three top-10 showings in his final campaign with the Frogs.
Woolf and James Sacheck (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville H.S.) each recorded a top-10 finish at the National Invitational Tournament as the TCU teammates notched a ninth-place showing with a tournament total of 214. Sacheck recorded his third top-10 finish of the 2007-08 campaign while Woolf notched his third top-20 finish of the spring season.
The Frogs captured the National Invitational Tournament with a strong field that consisted of five programs in the top-60 in the country. At the Morris Williams Intercollegiate - the Purple and White will go up against an even stronger field that includes top-ranked Alabama and sixth-ranked Oklahoma State. In total - the Morris Williams Intercollegiate will play host to 10 program ranked in the top-50 along with six programs in the top-20 in the country. The Purple and White will square-off against a trio of Mountain West Conference-foes in UNLV, New Mexico and BYU. This will be the second consecutive tournament that the Frogs will be paired with UNLV and New Mexico, and the Runnin' Rebels - who are ranked 14th in the country - captured the Morris Williams Intercollegiate last season. The 42nd Annual Morris Williams Intercollegiate will be hosted by the University of Texas and will be played at the University of Texas Golf Club for the first time in tournament history.
