TCU tops No. 50 Fresno State, 4-3
March 21, 2008 FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 28 TCU men's tennis team edged No. 50 Fresno State on Friday afternoon by a score of 4-3 at the Wathen Tennis Center in Fresno, Calif. With the win, the Horned Frogs improve to 13-4 this season, while Fresno State drops to 9-7 overall.
"It was good to get the win on the road in front of a big crowd," said TCU head coach Dave Borelli. "It's tough to get consistency going from indoors to outdoors, so I was glad we pulled out the win."
In doubles play, the 45th-ranked TCU duo of Kriegler Brink and Cosmin Cotet defeated Rudolf Siwy and Mirko Zapletal by a score of 8-5, while the Frog duo of Adrian Simon and Emanu Brighiu followed with an 8-5 victory over Flavio Mollinedo and Tejesvi Veerepalli to clinch the doubles point.
The Frogs lost singles matches at the No. 6 and No. 2 singles positions to go down 2-1 in the match before freshman Zach Nichols defeated Martin Nilsson by a score of 7-5, 6-2 to knot the match at 2-2.
Brink, a junior from Gauteng, South Africa, followed with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Denny Fafek at the No. 4 position to give TCU the 3-2 lead in the match. With the win, Brink improved to 16-0 in singles play this season.
Cotet would follow at the top singles position with a 6-1, 6-4 rout of No. 104 Siwy to clinch the match for the Frogs. The win was Cotet's fifth over a ranked opponent this season and 13th overall.
TCU will return to action tomorrow in Malibu, Calif., against No. 15 Pepperdine at 3 p.m. CDT.
