Derrey's 67 has TCU second at NCAA Regional
May 8, 2008
AUSTIN, Texas -- Keyed by Valentine Derrey's school-record tying 67, the TCU women's golf team shot a 3-under-par 285 and is in second place after Thursday's opening round of the NCAA Central Regional. Derrey's 67 equals her own TCU mark from last year's Lady Puerto Rico Classic. Former Horned Frog All-American Brooke Tull also shot a 67 at the 2004 Ping/Arizona State Invitational. Derrey, who had five birdies and no bogeys on the day, is third individually. The sophomore from Paris, France, is just two strokes behind leader Maria Jose Uribe of UCLA who carded a 65. The Horned Frogs' 285 represents the second-best round in TCU history, surpassed only by a 283 at the 2005 Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational in Manhattan, Kan. TCU, seeded 11th in the 21-team regional, is just two strokes behind top seed and third-ranked UCLA. The Bruins totaled a 5-under 283. Last year, the Frogs placed third at the NCAA Regional for their best finish in 20 total appearances at the event. The top eight teams advance to the NCAA National Championship May 20-23 in Albuquerque. Allyson Ferguson and Prisela Campbell, two of three freshmen in TCU's five-player lineup, also had career-best rounds. Ferguson's 1-under 71 was three strokes better than her previous low score and is tied for 10th individually. Campbell had a 73 to equal her best round. The Fossil Ridge High School graduate had a team-high six birdies. Carrie Morris, the lone senior on the TCU roster, had a 74. TCU's tee times begin at 12:30 p.m. for Friday's second round.
