No. 22 TCU blanks Colorado State, 7-0
March 28, 2008 FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 22 TCU women's tennis team opened Mountain West Conference play on Friday with a 7-0 shutout of Colorado State at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The Horned Frogs improved to 11-4 this season, while the Rams dropped to 6-4 overall.
"This was a good start to the conference regular season," said TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond. "We have three matches in three days, and we're looking forward to competing hard against Air Force tomorrow."
The TCU freshman duo of Idunn Hertzberg and Maria Babanova opened doubles play with an 8-3 victory over Kirsten Stople and Sarah Seltsam at the No. 3 position. Kewa Nichols and Katariina Tuohimaa followed with an 8-2 win over Anette Pohjalainen and Lauren Strasburger to clinch the match, while the 12th-ranked TCU duo of Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska completed the sweep with an 8-5 victory over Laura Neal and Hilary Tyler at the top spot.
Sydorska jumped out to a dominating lead at the No. 2 singles position before her opponent was forced to retire, while Nichols followed with a 6-0, 6-1 rout of Pohjalainen to put the Frogs up 3-0.
Hertzberg won her 11th match of the season, defeating Caitlin Fluegge by a score of 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 position to clinch the match for TCU.
Babanova put TCU up 5-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Greer Satherlie at the No. 6 slot, while Macall Harkins won her sixth match in the last seven contests with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Tyler at the top spot.
After winning the first set, Tuohimaa was ahead 4-3 in the second set against Colorado State's Strasburger before the match was forced indoors due to rain. Tuohimaa would win the second frame by a score of 6-3 to earn her team-leading 12th win of the season.
The Frogs will play host to Air Force on Saturday at 10 a.m.
