Tulsa Earns Highest-Ever Ranking in U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup

Golden Hurricane ranked 63rd in the final 2007-08 standings

June 27, 2008

Cleveland, Ohio - The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today announced today the final U.S. Sports Academy Director's Cup standings for the 2007-08 season. The University of Tulsa turned in a school-best 63rd place performance, while Stanford captured its 14th consecutive all-sports crown.

The scoring for the Directors' Cup is based on an institution's finish in the NCAA Championships. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 women's and 10 men's.

Tulsa totaled 315.50 points for the 2007-08 academic year, as the Golden Hurricane earned points in eight sports. The Hurricane claimed 136 points in the fall sports, earning points in Men's Cross Country (16), Football (45), Men's Soccer (50) and Volleyball (25). Tulsa garnered 179.5 in four spring sports, while earning points in Women's Golf (54.5), Softball (25), Women's Tennis (50) and Men's Tennis (50).

Tulsa's 63rd place performance is the highest finish ever for the Golden Hurricane in the 15 years of the Director's Cup Standings. The ranking is five places better than the school's previous-best performance of 68th place in the 1999-2000 season. Last year, Tulsa finished in 115th place in the Directors' Cup.

"This ranking demonstrates the tremendous efforts of our student-athletes and coaches," said Bubba Cunningham, Tulsa's director of athletics. "Not only do our coaches recruit quality student-athletes, but the training and coaching those athletes receive at The University of Tulsa is first-class. We've set a goal of reaching the top-50 in the Directors' Cup, and we're knocking on the door. This is a great achievement for a private institution with as small as an enrollment that we have here."

Stanford garnered the highest number of points with 1,461.00 points after claiming 21 post-season championships and earning points in a maximum of 10 women's sports and 10 men's sports to win its 14th straight title.

The U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between NACDA and USA Today. The United States Sports Academy, based in Daphne, Alabama, is the program's sponsor.
