Putnam City's Brandon Jackson Signs to Play Basketball at Tulsa

Jackson gives Tulsa four incoming players for 2008-09

April 16, 2008

Tulsa, Oklahoma - Putnam City (Okla.) High School's Brandon Jackson signed a national letter-of-intent to play basketball at The University of Tulsa, it was announced today by Head Coach Doug Wojcik.

Jackson, a 6'5", 170-pound point guard, was a three-year starter at Putnam City High School. He helped lead his team to a three-year mark of 80-11, including a 25-2 record his senior season. PC was ranked as the state's No. 1 team most of the season, but lost in the first round of the state tournament to eventual state champion Memorial High School

As a senior, Jackson averaged 9.0 points, 2.4 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.3 steals. He also shot 51-percent from the field and 37-percent from three-point range. He earned first-team All-Metro Athletic Conference honors as a senior, while being named honorable mention as a sophomore and second-team his junior season. Jackson also earned Daily Oklahoman Big All-City honors is final two seasons.

"We started recruiting Brandon in the middle of the year. We had known about him and watched him with the Athletes First AAU team in the summer, but he wasn't playing the point. Really, his true position is point guard, so we saw him with his high school team," said Wojcik.

"He has great size. He's left-handed which is unique. Brandon considers himself a true point guard, a pass-first guy. I love his size, and he has played at the highest level in Oklahoma and the highest level AAU team in the state. He's a basketball junkie. Brandon has a great IQ for the game," added Wojcik. "As we've gone through the league now in three years, the bigger the guard we can get, the better it will be to defend teams like Memphis. I think he helps us continue to surge towards the top of Conference USA.

"Brandon is a great student as well. He has great leadership floors on the floor. He does the right things as a leader, and I see him being able to do that with our team," said Wojcik.

Jackson completed his career with averages of 7.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.1 steals per game.

"Brandon is a young man who can score in a variety of ways, but he has the mentality to pass first, which he loves. His biggest concern is to help the team win, and he'll do whatever he has to, for that to happen. He has a big heart and a great basketball IQ. Brandon was a good defensive player for us as well. He was normally assigned to the opponent's top scorer," said Putnam City Head Coach A.D. Burtschi.

"Brandon is the consummate team player. He averaged 26 points on the freshman team, and then the last three years he has adapted to be a pass-first player because he realized the weapons he had around him," added Burtschi.

Jackson is the first signing for Tulsa this spring, but the fourth signee this year. The Hurricane signed two high school seniors and one junior college player last November.
