Tulsa Advances Four Boats at Dad Vail Regatta

Golden Hurricane to race Lightweight 4+ in finals

May 9, 2008

Philadelphia, Pa. - The University of Tulsa women's rowing team advanced four boats to the next round of races on Friday afternoon at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa. TU will compete in the semifinals in the Novice 4+, Varsity 8+ and 2nd Varsity 8+, while the Lightweight 4+ will race in the finals.

The Lightweight 4+ dominated their heat, winning by more than 10 seconds, to advance to the finals, but will take on a favored Pittsburgh team tomorrow.

"We will have to really go after it in the final," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "We faced Pittsburgh at the Knecht Cup so we know what they are capable of doing. We will have to stay focused and race a solid race tomorrow."

The Novice 4+ continued its unbeaten streak with a time of 7:29.06 in the heat, while the 2nd Varsity 8+ also claimed a top time in their heat to advance both boats to tomorrow's semifinals. The 2nd Varsity 8+ was behind with 400-meters left to race, but they pushed San Diego and claimed the top slot by a second.

The Varsity 8+ also took the long route to the semifinals, as they turned in a third-place mark in their heat to advance to the Repechage, or second-chance race, where they would have to earn the top time to continue racing. In the Repechage, the Golden Hurricane was behind at the 1,000-meter mark, but they charged their way down the course to take Marist by less than a second.

"It was a good day for Tulsa," Harris said. "We are excited to take four boats into tomorrow's races. Unfortunately, the Varsity 4+ didn't advance to the next round, but they had a great season."
