SAN MARCOS, Texas - - The UT Arlington baseball team fell behind early and couldn't recover from a seven-run, first-inning deficit as the Mavericks fell to Texas State, 13-4, in a Saturday afternoon Southland Conference game in San Marcos.

Texas State scored seven runs in the bottom of the first and two each in the second and third innings to take an 11-3 lead. UTA's third reliever, junior right-hander Matt Otteman held the Bobcats (12-7, 4-2) in check for the final five innings, but UTA (7-15, 2-4) couldn't make up the difference against three Texas State relievers in the seventh, eighth and ninth.

Zach Tritz (4-0) got the win for Texas State, pitching six innings and allowing four runs on nine hits.

UTA starter Mark Picca (0-1) took the loss, allowing six runs and six hits through 2/3 of an inning. Matt Otteman relieved Rett Varner and pitched the final five innings, allowed just two runs on five hits. UTA pitchers allowed 17 hits and four home runs.

UTA leadoff hitter and left-fielder Preston McCoy doubled singled, scored and drove in a run, while No. 2 hitter, first baseman David McLeod had two hits and one RBI.

The Mavericks return to action for a 7 p.m. game Tuesday night against Oklahoma in Norman, Okla.
