WICHITA, Kan. - - The UT Arlington golf team fired a 288-295--583 and will head into Tuesday's final round in fifth place among 16 teams at the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic in Wichita, Kan.
Although he's entered as a medalist and doesn't count in the team scores, UT Arlington junior transfer Kevin Carrigan has been the hottest golfer in the field and leads in the individual standings. Carrigan, who joined the Mavericks before this semester, fired a 7-under-par 135 and leads Joe Ida of Kansas State by two strokes going into today's third round.
Carrigan is one of only three golfers in the entire field of 90 golfers to shoot a sub-70 round in each of the first two rounds.
Even without Carrigan counting in the team scores, UTA is holding onto hopes of a team title behind an even-par 71-71--142 from Michael Van deVenter, who stands in seventh place individually. Bobby Massa is in 26th after turning in a 1-over-par 72 in the afternoon round. Massa has an overall score of 147. Zack Reeves and Bryce Easton are also among the Top 40.
UTA returns to action today for Round Three. The Mavericks are 16 strokes behind leader and host Wichita State.
This is UTA's final tuneup before the Southland Conference Tournament.
