LAKE CHARLES, La. - - The UT Arlington men's golf team opened the Southland Conference Golf Championships with a 14-over-par 302 on Monday, putting the Mavericks in fifth place after the first of three rounds.
Round 2 is scheduled Tuesday with the final round on tap for Wednesday at Gray Plantation golf course in Lake Charles, La.
Sam Houston State has taken the early lead with a 9-over-par 297. Lamar (298), Texas State (300), Southeastern Louisiana (301) and UTA (302) are all bunched among the top tier after Round 1 on the par-72 course. Central Arkansas and UTSA find themselves in a tough situation after the opening round, standing 11 strokes off the pace in a tie for seventh.
Zack Reeves led the Mavericks with an even-par 72, followed by Kevin Carrigan at 3-over-par and Bobby Massa at 4-over-par. Zack Fischer and Michael Van deVenter struggled on Monday, posting scores of 79 and 80, respectively.
Reeves recovered from a touch front nine to post seven pars and two birdies on the back nine, going from 2-over to even-par for the round. Carrigan had a chance to enter the clubhouse at 1-over after birdies on 15 and 16. But a double-bogey on No. 18 pushed his score to 3-over-par.
Massa struggled on the back nine but held on to post a 76.
He was even-par heading into the back nine and birdied the 10th before bogies on five of his final eight holes left him with a 4-over-par 76.
