ARLINGTON, Texas - - UT Arlington's track and field teams have one more chance to gear up for their conference championships, and the best part of this tuneup is that it comes at home.

The Mavericks will welcome 15 teams to Arlington on Friday and Saturday for the annual UTA Open at Maverick Stadium. Included in the field are nationally-ranked Baylor and local rivals TCU and North Texas. Conference foe Northwestern State also will make the trip.

Field events begin at 4 p.m. Friday with the women's hammer throw and continue until the men's and women's 10,000 meters is contested beginning at 7:15 p.m. A full day of competition is on tap for Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. with the women's pole vault.

Saturday's final event is the men's 1,600-meter relay scheduled at 6:25 p.m.

The Mavericks have two relay teams and six individual regional qualifiers who will try to improve their distances and times. The latest qualifier on the men's side it senior long jumper Quinchun Carey, whose leap of 24 feet, 6.5 inches on Thursday at the Rice Twilight placed him in the regional event.

UTA's men are two weeks away from trying to successfully defend their 2007 Southland Conference Championship. UTA captured the title last year in the final race of the night to edge UTSA by one point. The 2008 SLC Championships are scheduled May 9-11 at Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Texas.
