Broncs Drop Double-Header to UTA

The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team dropped game one 4-1 and game two 11-1 against Texas-Arlington in a double-header on Tuesday (Apr. 1) in Arlington, TX.

With the two setbacks, the Broncs fell to 9-17 on the season while UT-Arlington improved to 10-18 overall.

In game-one, the Mavericks jumped on the board in the bottom first when David McLeod tripled to right field and later scored following a ground out by Michael Choice, making the score 1-0.

After two scoreless innings, the Mavericks plated a run in the fourth when Choice led things off with a triple to center field and scored on a grounder to the second baseman, to make the score 2-0.

UT-Arlington added a run in the sixth when starting pitcher, Shane Janecka gave up a solo homerun to Danny Slinkman, to put the Mavericks up 3-0.

The Broncs connected on their lone run in the eighth inning on three hits. Bonham Hough led the inning with a single to center field and advanced to second on a Billy Donaho single to center field and scored following a single by Jose Mendoza, to make the score 3-1.

The Mavericks extended their lead in the bottom half of the inning connecting on a run on three hits.

UTPA Bronc hurler, Janecka took the loss, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing nine hits, four runs - all earned, dropping his record to 2-2 on the season.

Offensively the Broncs were led by Hough who went 2-for-4 with one run scored. The Mavericks had three players finish with multi-hit performances including the designated hitter Danny Sinkman finishing the game 2-for-3 to go with two RBI's and one run scored.

Game Two
The Broncs dropped game two of the doubled-header 11-1, connecting on only four hits to the Mavericks 10 in the contest.

UT-Arlington once again led things off with a run in the bottom first when starting pitcher Phillip Rodriguez issued a walk to Wilson and scored following a double to right center, making the score 1-0.

After three scoreless innings, the Broncs produced a run in the fifth when Roly Gonzalez singled to center field and came around to score following a double to center field by Donaho, to tie the game at 1-1.

The Mavericks biggest inning and worst for the Broncs came in the bottom sixth when they recorded nine runs on four hits including a four-run homer by Choice, to make the score 10-1.

UT-Arlington collected their 11th run of the game in the bottom eighth and sweep the Broncs 11-1.

Rodriguez took the loss for the Broncs, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing four hits, five runs - four earned and striking out five batters.

The Broncs were led offensively by Nick Bourn who went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

The Broncs will take a break from the road and enjoy the confines of the Edinburg Baseball Stadium when they host a three-game series against New Orleans on Friday (Apr. 4) with the first game slated for 6:05 p.m.
