The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis program announced that Beau Bernstein (Sugar Land, TX/ Stephen F. Austin H.S.) has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Broncs for the 2008-09 academic campaign.
"Beau is an excellent sign for UTPA tennis," said Hubbard. "He is ranked in the top 15 in Texas and top 170 in the country and adds excellent depth to our program. Beau brings a dynamic baseline game to UTPA and should compete for a starting position immediately."
"As an excellent doubles player, Beau won an ITA Doubles Tournament last summer with his brother, UTPA's Brett Bernstein. In addition to his talent as a tennis player, Beau is also an excellent student graduating from Stephen F. Austin High School with honors, said Hubbard."
The newly-inked Bronc comes to the Rio Grande Valley from Sugar Land, TX where he was ranked 15th in the Texas Junior singles and 17th in doubles (18 & under).
Bernstein recently defeated two of the top-10 Texas juniors in tournament competition and captured the 2007 Coca Cola Super Champs (18 & under) Tournament. According to the Tennis Recruiting Network, the newly-signed Bronc is ranked in the top-170 in the nation.
"I feel great about signing with UTPA because it is a great opportunity to join a team that is going to be making some noise next season," said Bernstein. "I can't wait to get started and prove to Coach Hubbard that he made the right choice in choosing me to be apart of this very skilled team."
"The guys on the team are all very talented and the work ethic the team displays is undoubtedly one of the best in the Southland Conference," added Bernstein.
Bernstein will join the UTPA's men's tennis team that returns all but one from the 2007-08 campaign including Ashwin Vijayaragavan (Andhrapradesh, India/Kenedy Vidya Bhavan HS) and Marcus Dornauf (East Launceston, Tasmania, Aus/Scotch Oakburn College Prep) who earned 2008 All-Southland Conference Second Team laurels in their first season.
