Day two at the Jack Brown Memorial Tournament turned out exactly how head men's and women's golf coach Ofelia Lopez expected, with both of her squads capturing their first title of the spring season.
Mariale Camey (Cuidad, Guatemala/University of New Orleans) collected her first tournament title in a Lady Broncs uniform where she finished with a two-round score of 153 (74-79).
Haley Hocott (San Antonio, TX/MacArthur H.S.) had a standout performance with a 36-hole score of 154 (80-74) en route to tying for second overall while Bronwyn Sandberg (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada/ Bellerose Composite) finished fourth overall with a two-round tally of 159 (79-80).
Rebecca De Leon (Mission, TX/Veterans Memorial H.S.) recorded her first top-five finish of her career with a two-round score of 161 (82-79) en route to a fifth place showing while Sara Maria Garcia (Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico/Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School) kept the Lady Broncs in the top-ten collecting a 36-hole score of 165 (82-83) with a seventh place finish.
The Lady Broncs finished with a team score of 627 while St. Mary's (690), Dallas Baptist (693), UT-Brownsville (700) and Incarnate Word (727) rounded off the top five.
The Broncs took home their first piece of hardware of the spring season, as Shane Pearce (Carrollton, TX/Hebron H.S.) led the way for UTPA posting a three-round score of 216 (76-65-75) en route to a second-place finish.
Pearce's second round score of 65 ranks him first in the all-time single-round records. The record was previously held by Luis Arechiga in the 1997 season.
Armen Kirakossian (Portland, OR/Wilson H.S.) finished tied for third overall with a 54-hole score of 219 (74-70-75) while A.J. Gonzalez tied for seventh overall with a three-round tally of 223 (73-74-76) for his first top-ten finish of his Bronc career.
Jeff Hensley (Van Horn, TX/ Van Horn H.S.) posted a 223 (79-69-75) tying for seventh place while Tim Acaster (North Battleford, SK/Saskatchewan Provincial H.S) recorded a 16th place finish with a three-round tally of 229 (77-79-73), respectively.
UTPA the tournament with a team tally of 876 while Texas A&M Commerce (885), St. Mary's (890), Incarnate Word (910) and Dallas Baptist (919) rounded off the top five.
The Lady Broncs will be back on the course in Corpus Christi, TX for the Islander Spring Classic hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Monday (Feb. 25).
The Broncs will be in search of their second tournament title in Beaumont, Ca where they will compete in the Braveheart Classic hosted by UC-Riverside on Monday (Mar. 3).
